93rd Season of the Altoona Symphony Orchestra Schedule of EVENTS!

The ALTOONA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is excited to announce its 2021-2022 Concert Series.
We are very pleased to announce the 93rd season of the Altoona Symphony Orchestra. The past year and a half has been challenging for all of us. In person attendance opportunities have been severely limited but we are delighted to announce that we are planning to return to full capacity for this upcoming season.
“It is our great pleasure to welcome back the highly talented Maestro Nicholas Palmer who will be conducting 5 of our 7 concerts this season and is serving in the role of this season’s Artist Director.” says the Symphony’s Executive Director, Rick Vanevenhoven.
The Symphony has titled this upcoming season New Beginnings: The Music Returns to mark its emergence from all of those limiting conditions that have been so challenging for all of us.
We will be opening our season with an outdoor concert, free to the public, at the Canal Basin Park in Hollidaysburg on Saturday, August 28, 2021, at 6:00 pm, sponsored by the Hollidaysburg Area Arts Council. This concert titled Hooray for Hollywood celebrates the great music of the movies. This pops concert will be great fun for all. We will feature music from Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, Gladiator and so many more movies. Bring your lawn or blanket!
Saturday, October 2, 7:30pm, at the Mishler Theatre we will feature the music of the master composer, Ludwig van Beethoven with such classics as his Symphonies 1, 4, 6 and 7 and his famous Violin Concerto featuring our wonderful concertmaster, Genaro Medina.
Our October 30, 7:30pm, at the Mishler Theatre concert titled We Love the 80’s. And when we say “the 80’s” we are referring to music of the 1680’s through the 1980’s! We will be including music by Mozart, Haydn, Pachelbel, Tchaikovsky, John Philip Sousa, Madonna, and Michael Jackson, just to name a few.
Our highly entertaining Home for the Holidays concert on December 4, at 7:30pm, will delight everyone who loves the great music of Christmases past! Concert location to be announced.
We welcome the esteemed guest conductor, Dennis Glocke, now retired, but held the position of Director of Concert Bands at Pennsylvania State University, University Park. He will be sharing his immense talents to conduct a winds and brass ensemble and present a wonderful selection of classical music. That concert will be held Saturday, March 19, 2022, 7:30pm, again at the historic Mishler Theatre.
And we could not be more delighted to announce that our long term, highly talented concertmaster, Genaro Medina, will take to the conductor’s podium on April 23, 2022, for his first opportunity at conducting. This will be a delightful change for him, our musicians, and our audience, alike. He will be conducting a chamber orchestra presenting the works of such greats as Bach, Mendelssohn and William Grant Still, Jr.
To round out the season, we have planned to present “Pops in Space!” on May 21, 2022, 7:30pm. We will be launching into outer space with great orchestral music from popular and well-known composers such as John Williams and Gustav Holst. Themes from Star Trek, E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, to name just a few. Concert location is the Mishler Theatre.
