New Tool Album 8/30/19

The wait is over: the first new album from Tool in 13 years, Fear Inoculum, arrives on Friday (August 30th), giving the band’s vast and super-patient fan base something to savor over the long Labor Day weekend.

The 86-minute follow-up to 2006’s 10,000 Days was carved out of studio sessions that began in March 2018, but the instrumental members of the group worked and reworked the material for several years before that, while singer Maynard James Keenan tended his winery and recorded with Puscifer and A Perfect Circle.

Drummer Danny Carey told us a while back that Tool has always insisted on taking its time with its music: [“We believed in what we were doing, and eventually the record company saw the light and believed in us too, so now they don’t bug us. We can take as long as we want in between records,, and the emphasis is more on making a good record, more than getting a record out, you know, by a date or something.”] SOUNDCUE (:14 OC: . . . date or something.)

Illness in the band and a lawsuit brought by a former friend over the use of his artwork, followed by a second lawsuit brought against the band by its insurance company after the firm failed to protect the group in the case of the first legal action, also stalled work on the new LP.

Jones told us a while back how badly the legal issues affected the group: [“You know, when you try to be ethical, and you try to sleep good at night, and you try to do the right thing, and people are not doing the right thing, and using that against you, it really affects your creativity, it affects your sleep and it affects your relationships with people and it affects everything you do. We would have had an album out a long time ago, we would have been taking a lot more tours, and that lawsuit, it was really distracting.”] SOUNDCUE (:24 OC: . . . was really distracting.)

He also told us not long ago that the members of Tool developed increasingly separate lives over the course of time: [“Everyone’s got their own lives. We have kids, we have other projects, we have other interests. You know, it’s like a marriage, you know, as you get older you kind of have to work at it and, you know, your partner changes and you have to kind of work to keep it going and keeping it positive and keeping the communication going and compromising and the respect and all that stuff.”] SOUNDCUE (:19 OC: . . . all that stuff.)

Tool released the title track from Fear Inoculum earlier this month. The band is reportedly mapping out tour dates now but has yet to make any official announcements.

  • Tool’s new album and first in 13 years comes out Friday (August 30th).
