Courtney Love and Frances Bean Cobain got a judge to order Frances’ former husband, Isaiah Silva, to undergo a psychiatric check on Tuesday (July 30th). The exam was meant to determine the state of his mental health in the legal battle over a famous Kurt Cobain guitar.
Silva sued Love, music industry figure Sam Lutfi and others last year for allegedly conspiring to kill him to get back Kurt’s guitar — which he’d been awarded in the divorce with Frances after he claimed she had given it to him as a gift.
Silva told police that Lutfi and another suspect grabbed him and carried him to a car. They allegedly took his phone and used bodily force, causing roughly $4,000 dollars worth of damage to the phone and some glass doors at the house that had been smashed. However, the police report was not filed until five days after the alleged incident.
The defendants hammered out a deal to have a psychiatrist check out Silva. The exam allegedly ran for seven hours and consisted of interviews, a mental status examination, as well as standardized psychological testing to gauge Silva’s sanity. The examiner’s notes will be included in Silva’s lawsuit.
The guitar in question is the one that Cobain played in the MTV Unplugged special shortly before his death. Love described the instrument as a “treasured heirloom of the family.”
