ELTON THROWS INAUGURAL ‘MIDSUMMER PARTY’ IN FRANCE FOR EJAF

Elton John and husband David Furnish‘s first “Midsummer Party” brought the starts out to Antibes, France on Wednesday night (July 24th). Seats to the party went for a minimum of $12,500, with The Hollywood Reporter posting the evening raised $6.1 million for the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF), “which is earmarked for testing and treatment programs in Kenya.”

Among the high profile guests were Pete TownshendJulian Lennon, and Coldplay‘s Chris Martin, who played a mini-set of “Something Just Like This,” “Yellow,” and “Viva la Vida,” before he and Elton duetted on “Rocket Man” and “I’m Still Standing.”

According to the report, “In the auction, guests paid $90,000 for tickets to John’s annual Oscar party, and Elton himself bid $280,000 on a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to add to his art collection.”

Amazingly, despite knowing him since he was 11-years-old, the benefit was Julian Lennon’s first time seeing Elton perform. Julian revealed that he and Elton are neighbors in Cote d’Azur on the French Riviera, explaining, “We have a lot of the same friends and we bump into each other, but I’m busy, he’s busy. I don’t know why but it’s just never happened so far. He revealed that the pair has talked about creating some music together: “We have talked about it so maybe that will happen this year.”

Elton John, who first started recording in the 1960’s, is truly a rock legend who can say they have “been there — done that” to the extreme: [“Rock n’ roll has given me an incredible life. What I did along the way, I was going, y’know, ‘Well, if there’s drugs, I’m gonna do them. I’m gonna play the whole game.’ And that’s a dangerous game to play because you might not come put the other side — and very nearly didn’t. I think that’s one of my personality traits; I’m a complete addict in anything I do. I do things in excess to everything — and I admit that. I would love to be a minimalist. And I look in magazines and I see minimalist homes and I say, ‘Oh, this is so great. This is aesthetically so beautiful’ — but I just can’t” (laughs)] SOUNDCUE (:32 OC: . . . I just can’t (laughs))
