IT’S THE END OF AN ERA AT ST. FRANCIS UNIVERSITY. IT WAS ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT JOE HAIGH HAS OFFICIALLY RESIGNED AS THE HEAD COACH OF THE ST. FRANCIS WOMENS BASKETBALL TEAM. IN A PUBLISHED REPORT TODAY, HAIGH SAID THAT THE DECISION WAS ALL HIS. HAIGH TOOK WHAT IS BEING CALLED A “LEAVE OF ABSENCE” FROM HIS JOB DURING THE EARLY PART OF THE SEASON, AND HAS NOT COACHED SINCE. HE SAID THAT HE CAN NOW CONCENTRATE ON HIS CHILDREN AND FAMILY, AND THAT HE WOULD LIKE TO COACH AGAIN. HAIGH WON 93 GAMES WITH THE FLASH, INCLUDING A NEC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP LAST YEAR AND EARNED AN NCAA TOURNEY BID.

TWO LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYERS WILL GET ANOTHER OPPPORTUNITY TO REPRESENT ALTOONA THIS SPRING. BISHOP GUILFOYLE KICKER KOLTEN McGHEE AND ALTOONA HIGH LINEMAN GAGE HILL WERE SELECTED TO REPRESENT PENNSYLVANIA IN THE BIG 33 GAME IN MAY. McGHEE LED THE STATE WITH A 46.2 YARD PUNTING AVERAGE, AND IS HEADED TO WEST VIRGINIA. HILL, A FIRST TEAM MID PENN ALL STAR SELECTION, IS HEADED TO TOLEDO TO CONTUNE HIS CAREER.

TWO HOLLIDAYSBURG FOOTBALL PLAYERS WILL GET A FINAL CHANCE TO PLAY ONE MORE TIME ALSO IN MAY. SENIORS NATHAN AND JOSH HOWELLS, HAVE BEEN CHOSEN TO PLAY FOR THE WEST SQUAD IN THE 2019 PSFCA EAST-WEST ALL STAR FOOTBALL GAME. THE TWIN BROTHERS FINISHED THEIR SENIOR SEASON AT HOLLIDAYSBURG IN 2018. THEY HAVE NOT CHOSEN A COLLEGE TO ATTEND.

BAD LUCK IS ALL THAT PENN STATE HAS THIS SEASON. THE NITTANY LIONS ALLOWED THE GAME TYING LAYUP WITH JUST 5 SECONDS LEFT, AND SCORED ONLY 5 POINTS IN OVERTIME, AS THEY LOST TO PURDUE 99-90 LAST NIGHT. PENN STATE HAS LOST 10 STRAIGHT GAMES, ALL IN THE BIG 10 CONFERENCE. THEY WILL TRY AGAIN MONDAY AT NORTHWESTERN.
