Dead & Company has announced a 19-date summer tour. The jaunt kicks off with a two-night stand at Mountain View, California’s Shoreline Amphitheatre, and will play double-night runs in George, Washington; Los Angeles; Chicago — and a tour-closing stand on July 5th and 6th at Boulder, Colorado’s Folsom Field. The band will also be playing single shows in Noblesville, Indiana; Saratoga Springs, New York; Camden, New Jersey; Foxborough, Massachusetts; New York City; Bristow, Virginia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Atlanta, Georgia; and Dallas, Texas.
Along with Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann — the band is rounded out with guitarist John Mayer, former-Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge, and longtime RatDog and Dead sideman, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti.
Bob Weir, who for years acted as Jerry Garcia‘s deputy in the Dead, talked to us about living a lifetime in the band: [“This is the only life I’ve ever known, so it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do, as well. It all seems real natural to me; ringing those lofty bells onstage — I live for that. In the mid-’70s, we decided we were going to start our own record company. In retrospect, we lost a lot of money, we found ourselves carrying briefcases and stuff like that and it was (laughs) — like I say, it was not something I would do again.”] SOUNDCUE(:26 OC: . . . would do again)
We asked Mickey Hart about the vibe on the road these days with the band: [“There’s really hardly any words to describe it. It’s so good now — we finally know how to do it, I think, after 50-some-odd years. I think we finally figured it out (laughs). And, it’s real smooth. John’s a great guitar player and, y’know, playing with Bill’s a joy — always has been, always will be — and Bob, he’s doing really well these days. And so, I’m a happy little puppy.”] SOUNDCUE (:25 OC: . . . happy little puppy)
Drummer Bill Kreutzmann told us a while back that ultimately the Dead’s music was created in hopes of bringing people together: [“I want people to really be able to look and be in each other’s hearts, and not have this horrible war — but I don’t mean just the war in Iraq, I mean war in our country, people not getting along, y’know? And so, that’s what I want people to get. I always want people to get happy and be with each other. That was the most fun about Grateful Dead concerts, is that you could really see people relating to each other. They really had heart for each other. It was truly an extended family.”] SOUNDCUE (:21 OC: . . . an extended family)
Dead & Company will next perform on January 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th in Quintana Roo, Mexico at Barcelo Riviera Maya.
