BOTH PITT AND PENN STATE ARE OFF TO GOOD STARTS IN THE COLLEGE BASKETBALL SEASON.

 

PENN STATE BEAT JACKSONVILLE STATE LAST NIGHT 76-61 AT THE BRYCE JORDAN CENTER. LAMAR STEVENS AND FRESHMAN  RASIR BOLTON EACH POURED IN 25 POINTS TO LEAD THE NITTANY LIONS TO THEIR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN. NEXT UP FOR PENN STATE, A TRIP TO DEPAUL ON THURSDAY NIGHT.

 

THE PITT PANTHERS AND NEW HEAD COACH JEFF CAPEL ARE ALSO OFF TO A GOOD START. THE PANTHERS BEAT TROY LAST NIGHT 85-75 AT THE PETERSEN EVENTS CENTER. THE PANTHERS ARE 3-0 SO FAR, AFTER ENDING LAST SEASON WITH A 19 GAME LOSING STREAK. PITT WILL HOST CENTRAL ARKANSAS ON THURSDAY NIGHT.

 

THE MOUNT ALOYSIUS MENS BASKETBALL TEAM OPENED ITS SEASON WITH AN 88-70 WIN OVER SHENANDOAH UNIVERSITY IN CRESSON LAST NIGHT. JULIAN STOVER AND DOUGLASS KAIMONNE EACH SCORED 23 POINTS FOR THE MOUNTIES, WHO WILL PLAY AT ROBERT MORRIS TOMORROW NIGHT.

 

2 DISTRICT 6 VOLLEYBALL TEAMS WILL VIE FOR A TRIP TO THE STATE FINALS LATER THIS WEEK. BUT THEY WILL SQUARE OFF AGAINST ONE ANOTHER TO SEE WHO GOES. BISHOP CARROLL AND NORTHERN CAMBRIA WILL MEET TONITE AT THE ALTOONA FIELDHOUSE IN THE CLASS 1A WESTERN FINAL. THE WINNER GETS A SPOT IN THE STATE TITLE MATCH ON SATURDAY.

 

IN SOCCER, THE BEDFORD GIRLS WILL PLAY SOUTH PARK IN THE CLASS 2A WESTERN FINALS TONIGHT AT SOMERSET HIGH SCHOOL. THE WINNER GOES TO THE STATE FINALS SATURDAY AT HERSHEYPARK STADIUM.
