Tom Petty “American Treasure” Out Today 9/28/18

Out today (September 28th) is the new Tom Petty box set, titled An American Treasure. The set was curated by Petty’s daughter Adria, his wife Dana, longtime Heartbreakers‘ Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench and veteran Petty engineer Ryan Ulate. The 60-track career spanning box features classic hits and album tracks, alongside unreleased live and studio material.

The set features an 84-page hardbound book with rare and previously unseen photos, along with an essay by renowned author Nicholas Dawidoff. The custom cover artwork for An American Treasure was created by prominent American artist Shepard Fairey from an image of Petty by renowned photographer Mark Seliger. The special deluxe version of the set also includes a newly-created lithograph of Fairey’s cover artwork, as well as custom reproductions of Tom Petty’s handwritten lyrics to four songs featured in this collection and a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Last month, the crowd-sourced video for Tom Petty’s 2007 “Clubhouse” version of his tune “You And Me” was posted online and is a remake of the 2002 track from The Last DJ album.

Ultimate Classic Rock reported at the time, “In addition to the fan-sourced material, which the Petty estate solicited ‘in honor of Tom Petty and his profound 40-year relationship with his fans,’ the ‘You And Me’ video also features Heartbreaker Benmont Tench playing piano, in footage shot (on) August 3rd at the band’s (recording and rehearsal space dubbed the) “Clubhouse.”

Although he was rated among the top classic rock artists of all time — the tag “classic rock” never sat well with Tom Petty: [“I don’t really like the term ‘classic’ too much. It makes me feel like there’s nowhere to go. I think there’s a lot of places to go with rock, still. I don’t think that it’s all. . .  the whole story has been told or the whole song has been sung. I still think they’ll be innovations within the form. And there’s something timeless about rock. . .  and roll. I like to have the roll on. “Cause the roll, to me, intimates a certain swing.”] SOUNDCUE (:30 OC: . . . a certain swing)
