NEW YEAR, SAME OLD STORY FOR THE CURVE AGAINST AKRON IN THE PLAYOFFS. NEWLY ACQUIRED JOSH DONALDSON ON A “REHAB” ASSIGNMENT, BELTED A 2 RUN HOME RUN IN THE 3RD INNING TO LIFT THE RUBBERDUCKS TO A 5-2 WIN OVER THE CURVE IN GAME 1 OF THE WESTERN DIVISION PLAYOFFS IN AKRON LAST NIGHT.

DONALDSON, TRADED FOR JUST LAST WEEK, IS PLAYING FOR THE DUCKS BEFORE HE JOINS HIS NEW CLUB THE INDIANS FOR THE MAJOR LEAGUE PLAYOFFS IN OCTOBER. THE CURVE LEFT THE BASES LOADED IN THE 7TH INNING, AND LEFT THE TYING RUN AT THE PLATE IN THE 9TH INNING, TO FALL BEHIND 1-0 IN THE BEST OF 5 SERIES.

THE CURVE HAVE NOW LOST 9 CONSECUTIVE PLAYOFF GAMES TO AKRON AT CANAL PARK. GAME 2 IS SET FOR TONIGHT AT 6:35 IN AKRON. EDUARDO VERA WILL PITCH FOR THE CURVE, WHILE JAKE PAULSEN WILL THROW FOR AKRON. THE SERIES SHIFTS TO ALTOONA FOR GAME 3 TOMORROW NIGHT.

MEMBERS OF A PUBLIC SCHOOL ATHLETIC COALITION MET WITH MEMBERS OF THE PIAA AND A CHARTER SCHOOL REPREENTATIVE YESTERDY AT HEINZ FIELD TO DISCUSS THE PURSUIT OF SEPARATING THE STATE FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS. AT THE HEART OF THE MEETING IS THE VALIDITY OF THE 1972 STATE LEGISLATURE MANDATE THAT PRIVATE SCHOOLS BE ADMITTED INTO THE PIAA AS MEMBERS. THE MANDATE ALSO SUGGESTS THAT ”ONLY” PRIVATE SCHOOLS BE ADMITTED. LEAVING THE QUESTION OF CHARTER SCHOOLS MEMBERSHIP INTO THE PIAA, BASED ON THAT RULING.
