LOCAL SPORTS 11/14/17

IT’S BACK TO THE MID-PENN CONFERENCE FOR ALTOONA HIGH SCHOOL. THE SCHOOL BOARD LAST VOTED 7-2 TO ACCEPT AN ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP TO THE CONFERENCE ON A LIMITED BASIS FOR THE FIRST FEW YEARS. TEAMS THAT WILL JOIN THE LEAGUE FOR THE 2018-19 SEASON ARE FOOTBALL, BOYS VOLLEYBALL, AND BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALL. THE AGREEMENT IS FOR 2 YEARS.

SEVERAL PARENTS WERE IN OPPOSITION TO THE MOVE TO THE MID-PENN LEAGUE, CITING POSSIBLE LONGER TRAVEL TIMES AND MORE TIME AWAY FROM SCHOOL WORK. ONE BOARD MEMBER, RON JOHNSTON SUGGESTED THAT THE DISTRICT COULD GO TO AN INDEPENDENT SCHEDULE, BUT IT WOULD TAKE SOME WORK. ATHLETIC DRIECTOR PHIL RICCIIO SAID THAT GOING INDEPENDENT DOES NOT INSURE A SCHEDULE, SAYING THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO GO TO MARYLAND AND OR NEW YORK TO GET GAMES.

THE BISHOP CARROLL GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM WILL TRY TO ADVANCE TO THE PIAA STATE TITLE MATCH TONIGHT WHEN THEY TAKE ON MARIAN CATHOLIC AT BIG SPRING HIGH SCHOOL AT 6:30.

IF YOU GO TO PENN STATE FOOTBALL GAMES, GET READY TO DIG A LITTLE DEEPER INTO YOUR POCKETS FOR NEXT SEASON. IT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED THAT TICKET PRICES WILL INCREASE BY $35 PER SEAT, ONLY $5 PER GAME NEXT SEASON. THIS IS THE FIRST PRICE INCREASE SINCE 2009. PARKING PRICES FOR CAR AND BUS SEASON AND ADVANCED SINGLE GAME PARKING WILL NOT CHANGE. THE STORY IS IN TODAYS ALTOONA MIRROR.
