TIM MCGRAW certainly looks like he owns the stage when he’s out there. But it wasn’t always that way. Back in the early days he used a specific prop to beef up his courage.
He says “I’m shy, so in the beginning of my career I put the cowboy hat on. Stepping up in front of the microphone, it was a different persona. It was almost like developing a character. It’s like Superman’s cape.”
He says it’s still the thing that changes him from being a regular guy to a country star. “I always say . . . when I put the hat on at night, it just changes everything that I do.”
But some insecurities never completely go away. Here’s what would go through his mind every night as the walk-up music played during the Soul 2 Soul Tour.
“I’m thinking, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to find it tonight, is it going to come?’ And Faith [Hill] and I look at each other and we sort of fist bump . . . and as soon as that thing starts coming up and you hear it, [then] all right there it is. It’s here.”
