Don’t want a hangover on New Year’s Day?

New Year’s Eve is just around the corner, and if you want to avoid a hangover on New Year’s Day, you’ll want to ditch champagne. German scientists have discovered that sticking to beer and beer alone can lessen the pain of the next day. Researchers gave mice specially brewed beer without hops, beer with high hop content, and pure alcohol to mimic a night of binge drinking. Others were just given a sugary solution rather than alcohol. Twelve hours later the mice were assessed, and those who were fed beer with hops had less build-up of fat in the liver, which can impact the organ’s ability to clear toxins from the blood. These mice also had less liver inflammation, and lower levels of molecules known to cause headaches. Researcher Dr. Ina Bergheim says, “Drinking fermented alcoholic beverages like beer may be less harmful than hard spirits. Whether these effects are found in chronic settings and humans, too, will have to be determined in future studies.”
