History Of the Super Group?

Yep, by now y’all know I am a trivia geek!  And in my line of work there’s TONS of little tidbits to learn.  So imagine the other day a friend of mine says he’s going to see one of the “Greatest Super Groups” of our time, Bad Company.  Well, shame on me!  I forgot that Simon Kirke and Paul Rodgers left FREE, joined up with Boz Burrell of King Crimson, and Mick Ralphs of Spooky Tooth and…BANG! Successful Super group! Okay, not gonna bore you with the THOUSANDS of combos and one-offs that could constitute a SG, but I will give you a rundown of what I’ve learned.

Supergroup (music)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A supergroup is a music group whose members are already successful as solo artists or as part of other groups or well known in other musical professions. Usually used in the context of rock and pop music, the term has been applied to other musical genres such as The Three Tenors in opera.[1]

First Rock Supergroup: The Steam Packet, 1965..but the only name I recognized was Rod Stewart (although there was a guy with the cool name, guitarist Long John Baldry in the band).

First Successful Rock Supergroup:  Cream, 1966..do I NEED to tell you Who was in this one?!!

Some I Didn’t KNOW where Supergroups: Humble Pie, Grand Funk Railroad, Journey, Little River Band

First Country SG:  The Notorious Cherry Bombs, 1980 with Vince Gill and Rodney Crowell (I would have BET the mortgage on the Highwaymen:  Waylon, Johnny, Willie, and Kris! (1984).)

Most Supergroups Played in :(just my guestimate here, Dave Grohl seems to play in quite a few now!)  Hands down to Sammy Hagar..Starting in 1983 with H.S.A.S., then Sammy Hagar & the Waboritas, Los Tres Gusanos (The 3 Worms), Planet Us, Chickenfoot, and now the Circle!!  Combos of players that you wouldn’t believe, you need a lineup card!

Here’s the best part..Supergroups, if you like them, have been, and are alive and well.  How about:  Temple of the Dog, Slash’s Snakepit, A Perfect Circle, Audio Slave, even the Foo Fighters are considered a Supergroup because Taylor Hawkins  and Pat Smear played with other bands before hooking up with David!  Today it’s Saint Asonia, Five Finger Death Punch, SIXX: AM, and the Hollywood Vampires  just to name a few!!

And this is just “The Tip of the Supergroup Iceberg”, and it all started with my friend going to a Bad Company show last week!!  I REALLY need a life!!
