I can’t really pinpoint exactly when it happened, but I know it had to be the re-runs of Monty Python’s Flying Circus that aired late nights back in the 80’s when I absolutely fell in love with this wacky British sketch comedy group! You see, originally the show only aired for a sparse 45 episodes over a 4-year period between 1969 and 1973, and I would have been way to young to understand classics like “Every Sperm is Sacred” or “Penguin on the Telly” at that time. I would have still been enrolled at the Eldorado Grade School.
and watching the” ABC After School Special”.
The Pythons, led by John Cleese, Eric Idle, and Michael Palin have been called to comedy what the Beatles were to music!! And to almost prove the point, here comes “SPAMALOT”, based on for the most part, the classic film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” from 1975…41 YEARS LATER! It will performed at the Mishler Theater this weekend, and my children and I as part of my Father’s Day weekend festivities will be taking it in. And I can’t tell you how pumped I am to see this adaptation, and laugh my butt off because, yep, my kids were raised hearing me quote and re-quote things like..”what are you going to do, bleed on me?” or “it’s got sharp, pointy fangs..” (all in a British accent for legitimacy of course! .and they too were “bitten by these silly snakes” So, the rambling point I guess I’m trying to make is…just like a good guitar, or a good bourbon, or a good band..quality lasts, even if you can’t really cut down the tallest tree in the forest with…a herring! See you at the show!!
