So here we are, May 5th..Cinco de Mayo, and I have had tickets to go to a quaint little place in Roaring Spring tonight and help in their celebration by seeing my friends play some tunes and enjoy a Mexican buffet. But what EXACTLY is the celebration for? So I did some research….Seems today commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. However, IT IS NOT Mexico’s Independence Day!(as so many wrongly proclaim!) And it also seems that back in the 1980’s corporations (especially restaurants and alcohol companies) began promoting today…and it took off!! Over time this holiday has been ingrained into American culture. Cinco de Mayo got it’s own commemorative postage stamp back about 18 years ago, and is customarily observed by the White House. So, after all that research, I am gonna go and eat and enjoy myself!!
